We create immersive, live audio visual experiences. We have a fascination with concepts and theories that are inspired by scientific endeavour, and seek to create shows that inform and inspire an audience. Our aim is to take the audience on a journey, one which mostly leaves them asking more questions. Our primary focus is exploring the element of performance and atmosphere. We utilise a range of formats and technology to realise each project, always with a strong emphasis on the ‘live’ element of performance. Even though the structure of a show may stay the same, no two shows are the same. Engaging with and responding to an audience is central to what we do. Our work fits into many environments. Throughout the development of that project we had created a lot of content based around the ‘Pale Blue Dot’ image taken by Voyager 1 in 1990 and the subsequent speech by Carl Sagan taken from his book of the same name. We decided to try and pull these together into a more conventional show that could be performed in any location. The Passage focuses on the remarkable journey of Voyager 1, the most distant man-made object from Earth. It’s an extraordinary location that’s remained mostly untouched since then. When you enter the building you can’t help but be struck by the scale and the sense of history and purpose is evident. The 24’ turbine blade, perfectly engineered is a thing of absolute beauty. But that’s not the reason void_null are there. In the back of the main space there’s a door that leads to ‘the return circuit’. A vast concrete cathedral of a space. Solid and totally dark. It was the space that was used to calm and control the flow of air around the wind tunnel. It’s pure engineering. Wedge shaped, precise angles, cold, flat surfaces. The complete absence of light and the other worldly acoustics attracted us to the this space to create a site specific show. The space was not designed for humans to inhabit. Surrounded by blackness and the disturbing echoes of your own sounds,&nbsp;being there is a sensory experience unlike any other. It forces you to challenge your sense of perspective. The project is inspired by the ‘Pale Blue Dot’, an image created by the Voyager 1 spacecraft in 1990. The famous astronomer and physicist Carl Sagan convinced NASA to turn the spacecrafts cameras back towards earth when it was some 3.7 billion miles away, for one last look. What it captured was a tiny pale blue dot, less than a pixel in size on the photo, caught in a shaft of sunlight, an artefact produced by the camera. Sagan went on to write about the Pale Blue Dot in a book. Many describe Sagan as a philosopher scientist, and his description of the photo, and everything it encapsulated leaves you with an acute sense of perspective, as an individual and as part of the human race. It opens up so many questions. With Voyager 1 &amp; 2 now both being clear of our solar system and hurtling through interstellar space, the two furthest pieces of humanity from earth, exploring the darkness of space, we felt that Q121 was a perfect location to explore this theme. We feel utterly honoured to have funding support from the Arts Council of England for the development of this project, which has helped transform our practice and afforded us the time to truly develop this show in the way that we’d like to. So far we’ve played this show on a single screen set up, but it’s very much in the early stages of it’s development. Sounds are played completely live, creating textures and ambiences that accompany the visuals (which are pre-produced clips triggered live during the performance).Fermi’s Paradox is named after the physicist Enrico Fermi. In it’s basic form, it suggests that given the size of the known universe and the size of our own galaxy, with the probability of there being a significant number of other earth-like planets that could nurture life, it should only take a few billion years for such a universe to be teaming with all manner of life…and yet, when we look out into the depth of space with our keenest of instruments, all we get back is ‘the great silence’. Using a series of quotes by Carl Sagan, the show explores this theme - what does it mean for us to really be alone in the universe? And perhaps the bigger question of ‘what does it mean to really understand that we may very well be unique…the only example of sentient life in our galaxy, possibly the universe. We developed this show for two screens - one semi transparent, situated in front of the secondary screen. Our objective was to make the show as live as possible - no pre-recorded sounds, no sync between sound and visuals, just live playing. For this Ian relies heavily on sequenced modular synthesisers and tape loops. Tones of discomfort, jarring oscillations from analogue synths die slowly away as we descend into the bleakest of futures. James designed the visuals to be far more fluid and ‘playable’ compared to previous work, triggering content in response the audio as the show progresses.
